BÖMMELS

Peter Bömmels is a German painter, draughtsman and sculptor. As a member of the artist group Mülheimer Freiheit, Bömmels is one of the most important representatives of the new painting of the 1980s (Neue Wilde). He taught at the Dresden University of Fine Arts from 2002 to 2018. From 1970 to 1976 he studied politics, sociology and education at the University of Cologne (state examination). From 1977 to 1980 he worked in a kindergarten. In 1980 he co-founded the Cologne artists’ group Mülheimer Freiheit (together with Hans Peter Adamski, Walter Dahn, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Gerard Kever and Gerhard Naschberger).

Also in 1980, he co-founded the music magazine SPEX. In 1983 he was awarded the North Rhine-Westphalia Prize for the Visual Arts. In 1986 and 1987 he was a visiting professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg, from 1990 to 1992 at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin, in 1996 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and from 2001 to 2002 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. From 2002 to 2004 he was a substitute professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden.From 2004 to 2018 he taught there as a professor of painting, graphics and other media of visual poetry.

Peter Bömmels is a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
