John Isaacs is widely considered one of the most influential artists of his generation. His practice has consistently combined deft, conceptual gestures with an emphasis on sculptural abilities, materials and forms. This exhibition and extensive accompanying catalogue features recent works produced in the fields of sculpture, painting and drawing. Isaacs often veers between monumentality and the subtlest of gestures, sometimes combining the two to forge unexpected resonances of form. The title of the show ‘The hand that rocks the cradle’ reveals not only Isaacs’s eclectically broad reaching multifaceted technical scope, but also his focused psycho-anthropological poetic. Fusing together as it does a wide range of physically challenging sculptural and emotively ideological perspectives, the works in this exhibition exist more in the realm of a curated historical ‘Wunderkammer’ than of a typical artist’s solo exhibition. So as to circumvent the confinements of the ‘contemporary’ John Isaacs has purposefully placed himself well beyond the typical cultural and aesthetic boundaries of contemporary art, and freely moves between the physically pre-determined roots of sculptural ideology and the shadows that are cast from our artistic forefathers unto this day.
