*1956 Oranienburg – lives in Berlin

In her art, Kerstin Grimm uses the possibilities given to her by drawing and sculpture, feeling at home with both mediums. Her drawing collages are made with mixed techniques superimposed on figures and landscapes, objects and seismograms, delicate linear graphics and transparent colours. Grimm grew up in Oranienburg in East Germany. From 1974 to 1980, she studied German philology at Humboldt University in Berlin, and then for two years she attended evening classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, paving her way into art. The artist loves everything that is unreal, impossible, or that only happens in fairy tales, and has for a long time used animals, children, and fairy-tale characters as motifs in her work. She creates a series of drawings, small bronze sculptures, or works like the large-scale series of “Kinderspiele” (Children’s Games) that has been in the making for the last 15 years. These are large-format drawing collages composed of multiple layers of painted paper, partially covered with transparent sheets. In 2010, Kerstin Grimm was a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, and in 2011 a sculpture teacher at the Berlin Weißensee School of Art.
