*1977 Waiblingen – lives in Berlin

In his paintings, Peter Böhnisch mostly embeds figurative and pictorial elements in a surreal, spatially hardly defined world and tells stories that never lead to unambiguous insight. What he tries to represent is not something that comes from our visual world, but something that is hidden within us. The artist, who was born in Waiblingen in 1977, says: “I want to get in touch with something that is always there. That many people may be longing for and that has to do with things that cannot be explained. Perhaps one could also describe that as joy, although my pictures are not only joyful.”

Böhnisch experiments with a wide variety of painting media and image carriers. After studying at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Anselm Reyle and Andreas Slominski, he initially stuck with drawings, which was then largely replaced by canvases painted with tempera, wax crayons, pastel or acrylic paints. Wax, sand and wood as image carriers are also used in his occasionally relief-like works.
